Using the RIT Library: Fines/Fees

General information about using the library at the Wallace Center

Fines for hourly loan items are assessed after a brief grace period then continue to accumulate at the rates below. The grace period is not meant to extend the loan for the item, but rather to give you a few extra minutes to return it if something comes up.

Reserve Books

  • Books on a 1 or 2 hour loan periods are assessed at $5.00 per hour
  • Books on a 24/48/72 hour loan period are assessed at $5.00 per day
  • Laptops fines are assessed at the rate of $5.00 per hour for each item (laptop and charger.)

  • Circulating collection — $10 fine is assessed when a book is overdue past 28 days.
  • A $1 per day fine is assessed when a book has been recalled and has not been returned after the recall date.
  • Leisure collection videos and DVD;s $1/day

Recall Notices

If another library patron requests a book that you have checked out, you will receive a recall notice by email.  You are entitled to keep the book until the date specified on the recall notice, but you must return it by that due date to avoid recall fines of $1/day.

Fines totaling more than $5 will suspend your borrowing privileges. Failure to return library books will cause a registrar block to be placed on your student account. This will prevent you from registering for classes

If you have any more questions about fines, please stop by the Circulation Desk or email us at
