Non-Course Requests

Faculty and staff may request to have an originality report generated for non-course related papers and projects created by RIT faculty, students, or staff such as campus publications and writing competitions.

To request an originality report for a non-academic paper or project the faculty or staff requestor must do the following:

  1. Remove all identifying author information (e.g. author’s name) from the document being submitted to the Turnitin system. This is to protect the author’s privacy.
  2. Email an attached copy of the document being submitted to the Turnitin system administrator (Lara Nicosia at turnitin@rit.edu) along with one of the following statements:
  • Submission with option to submit again
  • I hereby request to have the attached document submitted to the Turnitin system for an originality check. I understand that this tool does not explicitly detect plagiarism, but instead checks for improper citation or potential plagiarism against both online sources and documents in the tool’s database.I may wish to have the attached document checked for originality in the future and do not wish to have the aforementioned document added to the Turnitin database.
  • Final submission
  • I hereby request to have the attached document submitted to the Turnitin system for an originality check. I understand that this tool does not explicitly detect plagiarism, but instead checks for improper citation or potential plagiarism against both online sources and documents in the tool’s database.I do not plan to have the attached document checked for originality in the future and wish to have the document added to the Turnitin database. This will allow Turnitin to check future submissions against the attached document for originality of content. I understand that papers added to the Turnitin database cannot be removed and that should the attached paper be submitted for an originality check in the future, the originality report will generate a 100% match.
  1. If the document’s author was not notified in writing prior to submission that an originality report may be generated for the submitted document, the author must be notified before a report can be generated. Please copy the author on all related correspondence and have him or her directly email the Turnitin Administrator (Lara Nicosia at turnitin@rit.edu) the following statement from an RIT email account:I hereby request to have the document submitted by <requestor's name> for <project title such as RIT Writing Competition> submitted to the Turnitin system for an originality check. I understand that this tool does not explicitly detect plagiarism, but instead checks for improper citation or potential plagiarism against both online sources and documents in the tool’s database.
