AMA Citing Tips: DOI or URL?

A brief guide to citing AMA style

Electronic Journal Article

  • The DOI is preferred if available. 
  • Do not list both the journal article's url and its doi.
  • Only list the url if the doi is not available
  •  No accessed date is required for the doi,
  • The doi is placed at the end of the reference.

URL: Section 3:11:4

  1. Use the URL that will take the reader directly to the article
  2. Do not include a long search string,
  3. Avoid a short, more general URL (eg, one to the publisher’s homepage).
  4. Always include “http://” or “https://” before the URL
  5. URLs do not always require “www.”
  6. The URL is not followed by a period.
  7. Verify that the link still works as close as possible to publication.

Journals Without Volume or Issue Numbers. Section 3:11:6

In references to journals that have no volume or issue numbers, use the issue date, as shown in example 1 below. If there is an issue number but no volume number, use the style shown in example 2 below.
