| Article | A complete report on original research. |
| Review Article | A substantial overview of original research that usually contains a comprehensive bibliography. |
| Short Survey | A brief review of original research. |
| Short Communication | A short report or announcement of research which usually has a shorter publication time than other papers in the same publication. It may appear in the publication under other names, such as Letter Papers, Preliminary Notes. |
| Correspondence, Letter | A letter to the editor or a reply to the letter. |
| Discussion | An argumentative communication, such as a perspective or commentary. |
| Book Review | A critical discussion of a book's contents. |
| Product Review | A review of software, hardware, or some other type of product. |
| Editorial | An article from the editor or guest editor of a publication. A Foreword or Preface may also be assigned this document type. |
| Publisher's Note | A message from the publisher to the readers. |
| Erratum | An article in which errors are reported that were made in an earlier publication in the same book. An erratum may also appear in the publication as a Corrigendum. |
