What is AI?

  1. Do not upload your personal information like social security numbers, home address/phone numbers etc. AI software still trains itself on entered data.
  2. Do not upload copyrighted materials which are the contents of RIT Libraries databases, journals and books. Publishers had/have not provided their content usage permission to the AI companies during software development training.
  3. Check with your instructor if and how GenAI is allowed to be used in your class
  4. Cite the use of GenAI

How to use AI

GenAI Pro: Brainstorming research topics and search terms

GENAI Cons;

  • Biases in training models
  • Hallucinations (makes things up that are not factually accurate)
  • Environmental concerns:  A large amount of energy is used each time a GenAI tool is prompted for information.
  • Need to evaluate AI's responses & fact check: Does it provide sources of information? ,Where do they come from? Is this the most up to date information on this topic?

AI usage Examples

  •  Do not use AI for literature database searching because its answer source is unknown.
  • Use the AI keyword suggestions for research in a library database or with GoogleScholar .

EXAMPLE PROMPTS FOR AI:

  1. I am a psychology major undergraduate student researching global warming for a class research paper. What are some related search topics to explore? Only provide the topics. Do not offer to write the paper.

OR

2. I am an engineering doctoral student looking for search terms to use while researching the human impact on global warming? Only provide the search terms or keywords. Do not offer to write the paper.
