CITING DO NOT'S

CITING ETHICS 101

  1. Cite only the journal articles that you actually read.
  2. This means  that you read the introduction, mehtod, results , conclusion of a journal article.
  3. You do not cite references that are listed at the end of a journal article and which you did read .
  4. Do not cite references to a journal article you saw when using Googlescholar, where only a brief summary or excerpts of data are displayed.  You had to have actually read the whole article before citing it.

Citing tools

There are a variety of free citation management tools to help you with your research and citing.

Take time to view the tutorials first for example Zotero.  https://infoguides.rit.edu/zotero/tutorials

  1. Go to the zotero's website to register and to create your own username and password
  2. Download the zotero desktop app
  3. Download the zotero windows app to appear in Microsoft Word
  4. Download  zotero's web browser connectors
  5. Use the website forum pages to troubleshoot technical issues
  6. Zotero allows you to use googledoc or a word document to add your list of collected article citations
  7. To reorder intext citations:   highlight the intext citation then make the change then hit refresh

Zotero’s FAQ:   Zotero will renumber citations if you move text around automatically . You might have to hit the Refresh button in the Word add-on. Zoteor source link: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/52513/how-to-change-the-order-of-citation-in-word-plug-in

You may have to add the citing format for SPIE into Zotero, if you do not see it listed under citing styles.
