The Open Notebook

The Open Notebook is a non-profit organization often regarded as the leading online source of training and educational materials for journalists who cover science. Their mission is to foster a supportive, diverse, and inclusive global community.  The Open Notebook offers a comprehensive library of articles on the craft of science journalism.

English 381 & use of The Open Notebook

In addition to standalone articles about the craft and technique of science writing, written by practicing writers and scientists, The Open Notebook curates a “pitch database” and publishes “storygrams.” Students will read and discuss multiple examples of writing from the pitch database and review one storygram for each case analysis assignment. Storygrams offer compelling, writerly perspectives on science writing. Expert writers annotate noteworthy science stories to explore what makes them so outstanding and present interviews with the story's author.
