1. Original research journal articles /reports and 2. review journal articles are the types of documents you will use for your papers.
While searching databases and Googlescholar you will come across other types of documents. The following are examples:

Article | A complete report on original research. |
Review Article | A substantial overview of original research that usually contains a comprehensive bibliography. |
Short Survey | A brief review of original research. |
Short Communication | A short report or announcement of research which usually has a shorter publication time than other papers in the same publication. It may appear in the publication under other names, such as Letter Papers, Preliminary Notes. |
Correspondence, Letter | A letter to the editor or a reply to the letter. |
Discussion | An argumentative communication, such as a perspective or commentary. |
Book Review | A critical discussion of a book's contents. |
Product Review | A review of software, hardware, or some other type of product. |
Editorial | An article from the editor or guest editor of a publication. A Foreword or Preface may also be assigned this document type. |
Publisher's Note | A message from the publisher to the readers. |
Erratum | An article in which errors are reported that were made in an earlier publication in the same book. An erratum may also appear in the publication as a Corrigendum. |
