Database Limiters

APA PsycINFO and APA PsycArticles databases (for psychology topics) allow you to limit your results by the type of data a study uses. When you enter the database, click on advanced search, scroll down to the methodology section and check for qualitative and/or quantitative studies. You can also check off empirical articles.

If you want to search both databases simultaneously, go up to the top of the database and click on the hamburger menu in the left corner. Click on Change Databases. You now have a database list and can check off these two databases to search for articles.

The ERIC database (advanced search) allows you to check off numeric/quantitative data in the publication type category.

Other databases will not have the methodology category but click on advanced search, and you can check off Scholarly Journal in the source type category. When you search for articles using these databases, you can put in your keywords and add another search term, like a quantitative study, if you are looking for that type of article.

PsycTests is a database where you can find tests to conduct your research. After entering the database, select "Advanced Search." Type in your keywords.  Example: Enter search words such as “stroop” or “implicit association” or “racial bias” and then results will populate.  Scroll down the advanced search form and check off under permissions "may use for teaching" and "not specified." Also, check off under Administration "electronic", "interview", "other". Open up your test to see if you can use it for your research project.

Some will say “contact author to obtain permission”.

If you select “advanced search” and select these options (electronic), the tests may be available for download.
