Course Goal for ELCA 12 & 22

At the Academic Level, the goal of this exit-level course is to prepare undergraduate students for (1) the required First-Year Writing course (UWRT-150), (2) Writing-intensive courses in their major and in general education, and (3) writing assignments found in any university writing course.

At the Advanced Level, the goal of the course is to familiarize students with the conventions of academic discourse so that they can apply these features in their own writing to purposefully express and connect their own ideas, to correctly integrate sources, and to use appropriate academic grammar and vocabulary.

e-Articles from Databases

The majority of the library databases come from three companies, EBSCOGale, and ProQuest. Some article databases have accessible features such as language options to search the interface and translate articles. There are also text to voice options on HTML documents, and screen reader accessibility. If you are using other databases, you can find more information about these features by clicking the "Help" or "Accessibility" link on the database page. Explore other databases

The library's databases present articles and abstracts in two different formats: PDF or HTML. HTML articles are read by "read aloud" software.  PDF accessibility depends on how and when the articles were scanned. Recent PDFs scanned using the optical character recognition feature will be readable to screen readers.

Lexile measures and content levels help users find material that is appropriate for their reading level. You can find Lexile measures in the results page. You can limit your results to a particular Lexile measure or range by using the available search filters in the sidebar in both basic and advanced searches.

Lexile measures are determined based on an article's complexity and look at factors such as sentence length and vocabulary range.  There are five Content levels, Level One through Level Five, which correspond to the following Lexile measures.

Level One: to 500L (K-2nd grade reading level)
Level Two: 501L-850L (2nd-4th grade reading level)
Level Three: 851L-1100L (4th-6th grade reading level)
Level Four: 1101L-1300L (5th-7th grade reading level)
Level Five: 1301L and up (7th-12th grade reading level)
