What Is EndNote?

EndNote is an online citation management system that allows you to collect references from library database searches, organize them, and create formatted bibliographies from them using many different citation styles.

Important things to know about EndNote:

  • Access is provided by RIT Libraries as part of the Web of Science
  • Because it is an online system that allows you to log in to your own customized library of references, there is no need to save copies of references or papers on your computer and you can effectively access your references from wherever you are working
  • You can store up to 50,000 references in your personal EndNote online account
  • You can attach files to your references, up to 2GB of total storage
  • You can share groups of references with other users of EndNote
  • The version of EndNote described in this guide is an older version of the program and the vendor is not actively developing new features for this version

Finally, the most important thing to know about EndNote:

  • IT IS NOT PERFECT!  You can use EndNote to help you create formatted bibliographies, but you must still review the output against the standards of the citation format you are using

Using EndNote at RIT

  • Using EndNote online requires a dedicated registration - Go to the "Getting Started" tab for complete registration instructions
  • RIT affiliated users can sign up for EndNote online and take advantage of a full complement of citation styles via RIT's Web of Science subscription
  • If you still wish to use EndNote after your affiliation with RIT ends, you can continue to use EndNote - but you'll be limited to only the most commonly used preloaded citation styles.  If you still require other citation styles after leaving RIT, you will have to purchase the full desktop version
  • RIT Libraries do not provide access to the desktop version of EndNote, though it can be purchased on an individual basis
