Try Hoover's for basic company information and access to the annual reports. Read the Letters to the Shareholders near the beginning of the report.
Search news in Proquest (New York Times and Wall Street Journal). Look at the companies' websites that share news, usually in a section called media press. 

Information about companies will vary. Try Company Profiles in Business Source Elite

U.S. based publicly-traded company--Lots of information available

U.S. based privately held company--Very little information available

Non-U.S. based publicly-traded company--Some information available

Non-U.S. based privately held company--Very little information available
