How to Research ESG & CSR

If you are doing a paper as an exercise to explore a company's ESG (environmental, social, governance) & CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities, choose to research a company which discloses information on these topics. Search the company website to confirm they issue some form of a sustainability or environmental report and/or a corporate social responsibility or governance report. Not all companies discuss these issues publicly.

Highly recommended you pick a US based publicly traced company. Publicly traded companies release more information about themselves than private companies do.

Items to look at if available:

  • Company website (use Google or your fav search engine to find company websites)
  • Annual report
  • Sustainability Report
  • ESG Report
  • News issued by the company
  • News about the company from outside sources
  • ESG Ratings - CSRHub on NexisUni

Use Hoovers to figure if a company is based in teh US and publicly traded. Alternatively you can also go to a company's website to see where they are headquartered and if they have an Investor's or Shareholders section on teh site.
