What is Digital Publishing?

Digital publishing is the publication of content on an electronic medium -- the web or electronic carriers of materials such as e-books. In the Digital Humanities and Social Sciences, digital publishing allows users to distribute information and scholarship on a digital platform (most commonly a self-managed website), making it more widely available and allowing more creative avenues to share information.

What can you do with Digital Publishing?

  • Develop a personal research or project website
  • Create a private course blog
  • Write an interactive, "Choose Your Own Adventure"-like story
  • Incorporate media and text to develop a narrative
  • Generate tutorials or reusable resources for your classroom

Website Builders

WordPress

WordPress is a content management system that allows users to create and manage websites. Users create blogs, research websites, or commercial websites using WordPress's templates. No HTML or CSS skills are required to build a WordPress site.

Scalar

Scalar is a free and open source platform that enables authors to create "books" of long-form scholarship with integrated media. Its features of including multimedia and creating nonlinear story paths distinguishes Scalar from other publishing platforms.

Interactive Storytelling

Twine

Twine allows users to create non-linear stories (called "games") by adding story elements and creating paths between them. Twine games are saved and shared as HTML files.

TextureWriter

Similar to Twine, TextureWriter is a free platform that allows users to create interactive, non-linear stories. Stories are published on TextureWriter's website and can be shared to the site's Public Library.
