Finding DVDs and YouTube Videos

This image shows a Chinese deaf dance troupe dressed in gold costume and headdress and many hands encircling the main figure behind her.

The image at left is from a YouTube video.  We have some DVDs about Deaf international people and international sign languages. You can use the keywords deaf* AND specific country or search using"sign language" AND (world OR international OR global)  or "sign language" AND specific country to retrieve results. You can also use the keywords (deaf* OR "sign language") AND the name of country if interested in a specific country.

The asterisk * next to the keywords will find variations in the spelling of that word, ie, Deafened, Deaf-Blind, etc. Narrow the RIT Libraries catalog search to videos.

YouTube has online videos you can look at. Use the keywords deaf AND the name of the country. Do not use the asterisk for your keywords when searching for YouTube videos.

You can also check out the Gallaudet Video Catalog. It is best if you have the name of a person.

Finding Books

The image is a black and white book cover entitled (white font) "Deaf Around the World". It shows the Earth and two hands. Use the keywords (deaf* OR "sign language") AND name of country to retrieve book results. We have international Deaf and sign languages resources. Check out these Deaf International organizations.

The Gallaudet Encyclopedia and the Sage Deaf Studies Encyclopedia has articles on specific countries. Use Deaf biographies like Great Deaf Americans, Deaf Persons in the Arts and Sciences, and Movers and Shakers: Deaf People Who Changed the World to find more articles about Deaf African Americans.

Finding Deaf International People

Use the Gallaudet Biography Database to find Deaf international people. You can browse by ethnicity.  You can also search the Gallaudet Deaf Periodicals Database and scroll down to specific countries to find articles in a variety of magazines.  Check the A-Z Journal Finder list to see if we have the title.

If we do not have the magazine, you can use Interlibrary Loan for free. You must register and then you can order articles and books.

This record is from the Deaf Biography Database. Note the References. These are articles, book chapters, and other items where you can find more information about the person. You can look up the title of books using our RIT Libraries Catalog,
