Finding DVDs and YouTube Videos

We have some DVDs either created by or about Deaf Native American/American Indian/Alaskan Native people. You can use the keywords deaf* AND (Native American* OR American Indian*) to retrieve the best results. You can also search by specific tribes. The asterisk * next to the keywords will find variations in the spelling of that word, ie, Deafened, DeafBlind, and Americans. Narrow the RIT Libraries catalog search to videos.

YouTube has online videos you can look at. Use the keywords deaf AND (Native American OR American Indian). Do not use the asterisk for your keywords when searching for YouTube videos.

You can also check out the Gallaudet Video Catalog. It is best if you have the name of a person to locate a video. Onalee Cooper, a Native American from Rochester, NY has a father who was Chief Clinton Rickard. She donated his biography which we have in our collection.

Finding Books

Use the keywords deaf* AND (Native American* OR Indian* OR indigenous) to retrieve book results. You can search by specific tribe names as well. Note that some Native American tribes have dialects, that both Deaf and hearing use and that Deaf Native Americans use. Check out the Deaf Native organization for more information. Another organization is the Turtle Island HandTalk

The Gallaudet Encyclopedia and the  Sage Deaf Studies Encyclopedia has articles on Plains Indians and sign language dialects. Use Deaf biographies like Great Deaf Americans, Deaf Persons in the Arts and Sciences, and Movers and Shakers: Deaf People Who Changed the World to find more articles about Deaf Native Americans.

Finding Deaf Native Americans

Use the Gallaudet Biography Database to find Deaf Native Americans. You can browse by ethnicity. You can also search the Gallaudet Deaf Periodicals Database and scroll down to Indians of North America or the names of tribes to find articles in a variety of magazines.  Check the A-Z Journal Finder list to see if we have the title.

If we do not have the magazine, you can use Interlibrary Loan for free. You must register and then you can order articles and books.
This record is from the Deaf Biography Database. Note the References. These are articles, book chapters, and other items where you can find more information about the person. You can look up the title of books using our RIT Libraries Catalog.
