Basics of Citing with Mendeley

Mendeley allows you to easily and accurately cite references from your library in your academic writing.  Mendeley Cite is compatible with Microsoft Word for Windows or Mac.  Unfortunately, Mendeley Cite is not compatible with Google Docs.

Because Mendeley uses the Citation Style Language (CSL), it is possible to customize citation styles to fit your particular needs.

Mendeley Cite

Mendeley Cite is the citation app for Mendeley.  In addition to the standard desktop Word program, Mendeley Cite also works with Word 365 Online and the Word app for iPad

Please note: you will need both a Mendeley account and a Microsoft Store account to install Mendeley Cite, whether you use it with Word 365 Online or Word Desktop.

Once you have installed Mendeley Cite and logged in with your Mendeley account, open the Mendeley Cite add-in by selecting Insert and then My Add-Ins. The Mendeley Cite add-in will then be available under the References tab in Word.

Citation Styles

To access the citation styles available in Mendeley:

  • Open Mendeley Cite
  • Select Citation Settings
  • The last style used will show up under Citation Style; to change the style, click "Change citation style"

Mendeley also offers basic citation guides for the APA, MLA, and Harvard styles - see the link below for these guide.
