Mendeley: Citing with Mendeley

Basics of Citing with Mendeley

Mendeley allows you to easily and accurately cite references from your library in your academic writing.  Mendeley's citation tools are compatible with Microsoft Word for Windows or Mac, and with LibreOffice for any operating system.  Unfortunately, Mendeley's citation tools are not compatible with Google Docs.

Because Mendeley uses the Citation Style Language (CSL), it is possible to customize citation styles to fit your particular needs.

Mendeley Word Plugin

To use Mendeley's Word plugin (compatible with both Windows and Mac versions of Word):

  • Open Mendeley Desktop
  • Select the Tools menu
  • Select Install MS Word Plugin

When installed the plugin will appear as below in Word for Windows:

And when installed on Word for Mac:

You can use the Mendley Citation Plugin for Word to insert citations for references in your library, and insert bibliographies of all citations present in your document, according to the citation style of your choosing.

Mendeley Cite

Mendeley Cite is the next-generation citation app for Mendeley.  In addition to the standard desktop Word program, Mendeley Cite also works with Microsoft Word Online and the Word app for iPad

Citation Styles

To access the citation styles available in Mendeley:

  • Open Mendeley Desktop
  • Select the View menu
  • Select Citation Style - this opens a sub-menu
  • Choose one of the top ten styles, or access thousands more by selecting "More Styles..."

Mendeley also offers basic citation guides for the APA, MLA, and Harvard styles - see the link below for these guide.
