Susan Dupor

This video is available courtesy of Patti Durr's Deaf Art, Deaf Artists website. Born deaf, Susan Dupor grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. She attended RIT and studied illustration before transferring to the Art Institute of Chicago, where she finished her BFA. Dupor has participated in several exhibitions and published articles on deaf culture and the arts. She returned to RIT and earned a Master of Science in Deaf Education and Art Education, a joint program with the University of Rochester. The untitled piece was created when Susan was a student. DEAF ART PAINTINGS”, April 26-May 3, Student Alumni Union at RIT, Display case.

Oil on canvas

On a yellow background in a forest, a woman with red hair in a brown dress extends her hands, signing “beckoning” to crows flying around her. Some are pecking at the forest ground. The signs are shown in slow motion.

A deaf child is in front of a yellow table, representing a barrier. Seated on the sofa are hearing individuals talking, with blurred faces and crossed arms signifying no communication with the deaf child. The deaf child feels like she is being treated like a pet dog.
