Okinu's brother, Saijiro, borrows money from Choemon to buy out Yukino's contract from the red light district. In the meantime, Gihei, who is Choemon's stepbrother, comes across a love letter from Ohan to Choemon, Okinu's husband, and tries to torment her. The virtuous Okinu bribes the neighbor's apprentice, Chokichi, whose name is similar to her husband's, to say that he, Chokichi, and not Choemon, is Ohan's lover. When Choemon's foster parents are confronted with this, Chokichi does his duty as told. However, Ohan later comes to see Chosemon, saying she has left home. Choemon, realizing his predicament goes off to commit suicide with Ohan in the Katsura River.
