The RIT Dance Company in Concert: April 11-14, 1996

Michael Thomas, the internationally acclaimed choreographer, presented a concert that served as a retrospective celebration of his most compelling and innovative works. This special event not only revisited highlights from Thomas’s distinguished career but also introduced two new pieces—one choreographed by Thomas himself and another by guest choreographer Christopher Smith.

The concert program featured a diverse and powerful selection of works:

  • "Them There Eyes" – A vibrant and heartfelt tribute to the legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday, choreographed by Christopher Smith. This piece blended expressive movement with the emotional depth of Holiday’s music, capturing the essence of her artistry and spirit.

  • "Twilight" – A newly choreographed dramatic work by Michael Thomas. Evocative and introspective, the piece explored themes of transition, solitude, and resilience, showcasing Thomas’s signature style and emotional range.

  • "Romeo and Juliet" (Final Act) – A bold and imaginative reinterpretation of the classic ballet, presented in a Kabuki-inspired style by Michael Thomas. By fusing Western ballet with traditional Japanese theatrical elements, Thomas brought a fresh and visually striking perspective to the tragic final act of Shakespeare’s timeless love story.

  • "Jungle" – A dynamic and visually rich piece inspired by the lush rainforests of Brazil. In this work, Thomas conveyed the energy, movement, and life of the jungle through rhythmic choreography and vibrant staging, immersing the audience in the sounds and sensations of the natural world.

This concert offered audiences a unique opportunity to reflect on the evolution of Michael Thomas’s choreographic voice while experiencing new creative expressions. Through a compelling blend of cultural influences, musical inspiration, and emotional storytelling, the performance stood as a testament to his continued impact on the world of dance and choreography.
