An extravaganza in the truest sense of the word came to NTID’s Robert F. Panara Theatre during the winter season when NTID Performing Arts presented Jackson Pollock: In the Painting, an original performance art event created and directed by Michael Angelo Tortora.
This groundbreaking production combined high-tech special effects, exquisitely staged choreography, and a powerful, emotionally resonant soundtrack to immerse the audience in the chaotic and electrifying world of abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock. The performance centered on the creation of one of Pollock’s most celebrated works, Convergence, and sought to capture not only the physical process of painting but also the inner turmoil, energy, and brilliance that fueled his art.
Five female dancers shared the stage with the character of Pollock, interacting with him in the intimate setting of his farmhouse studio. Each dancer embodied both a color from the painting—black, white, red, blue, and yellow—and a different woman from Pollock’s life. On a visual level, they represented the palette of Convergence, but on a more emotional and symbolic level, they became living metaphors for the women who influenced and shaped the artist’s personal journey.
The production featured a seamless integration of computer-animated graphics, video projections, slides, and dynamic lighting effects. These elements worked together to pull the audience directly into the creative mind of Jackson Pollock, offering an abstract, sensory experience that mirrored the intensity and spontaneity of his art. The extraordinary music score underscored the depth of the performance, emphasizing the passion, frustration, and genius that defined Pollock’s life and legacy.
Jackson Pollock: In the Painting was more than a performance—it was an immersive journey into the soul of an artist. Through its innovative blend of dance, multimedia, and theatrical storytelling, the production paid powerful tribute to Pollock’s groundbreaking contributions to modern art and offered audiences a visceral look at the intersection of creativity, madness, and emotion.
