West Side Story: April 29-May 2 and 7-8, 1999

The performers began technical rehearsals for the two-week run of West Side Story in the shadow of the tragic school shooting in Columbine, Colorado. The sign actor portraying Tony, John Nemeth, was from a neighboring high school in the next town and knew some of the students who were killed. It was a sobering reminder of the cultural relevance of this groundbreaking musical—that hope, love, and humor can emerge even in the harshest circumstances, and that struggle and strength can stand against senseless violence.

More than 100 Deaf and hearing students participated in the cast and orchestra, and each performance played to a full house, making West Side Story a powerful example of community support and creative collaboration.
