An Italian Straw Hat (or Un Chapeau de Paille d’Italie) was written by Eugène Labiche (1815–1888). Labiche is regarded by some as one of France’s three great comedy writers, alongside Molière (1622–1673) and Georges Feydeau (1862–1921). Although Labiche wrote 174 plays—many of which were quite popular during his lifetime—few are produced in America today.
One of the largest casts ever assembled created the most culturally Italian performance in the history of the Panara Theatre. This production featured accomplished Deaf actor and new faculty member Howie Seago in the lead role. Mr. Seago has taught Sign Mime at NTID, as well as acting courses and high school ASL. He has participated in several significant productions, including his internationally recognized role in Peter Sellars’ production of Ajax.
