Seasons (RIT Dance Co.): November 5-8, 2015

The rhythm of the seasons reflects a natural cycle—an ebb and flow that brings new experiences while echoing the past that shaped growth. The dance production Seasons sought to capture these inevitable transitions: the gradual fading of autumn’s vibrant colors signaling the approach of winter; the stark beauty of winter giving way to the soft green emergence of spring; and spring unfolding into the bright, expansive energy of summer.

The production featured a wide range of dance styles—including ballet, modern, jazz, tango, hip-hop, and tap—brought together through vivid color, sound, visual projections, costumes, lighting, set design, and live music. This event marked one of the earliest major collaborations between the nearly 30-year-old RIT/NTID Dance Company, composed of Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing dancers, and several campus groups. Participating organizations included Vis Viva Dance Company, Velocity Urban Dance Crew, Tango Dance Club, Eight Beat Measure, and the RIT String Quartet. Performances on the 5th and 6th also featured special guest artist Svet, an internationally recognized electro hip-hop violinist.

Seasons centered on themes of transition and reflection. The RIT/NTID Dance Company presented four new works by director and choreographer Thomas Warfield, including a snowflake-inspired ballet, a modern piece based on the structure and symbolism of a tree, a modern dance evoking fireflies on a star-filled summer night, and a modern jazz finale. Additional pieces included a group tap dance choreographed by Nicole Hood in memory of her grandmother, Valarie George, who began tap dancing at age 60 and continued until her passing; a hip-hop and jazz stomp work by Keo Phouminh; ballet and jazz selections by Vis Viva Dance Company; tango by the Tango Club; and hip-hop by the Velocity Dance Crew.

The production offered a unique blend of dance, music, and visual theater, celebrating the beauty of change and the artistry found within each season.
