In October 2010, the late Congresswoman Louise Slaughter received the RIT Presidential Medallion. As part of the celebration, she and her guests previewed NTID Performing Arts’ fall production of Inherit the Wind, which highlighted two key scenes.
Inherit the Wind, inspired by the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial, centers on a rural teacher, Bert Cates, who is jailed for teaching evolution. His defense attorney, Henry Drummond, faces off against prosecutor Matthew Harrison Brady.
The first preview scene depicts the night before the trial, with Reverend Jeremiah Brown leading a fiery revival against Cates, while Brady and Brown’s daughter, Rachel—who is in love with Cates—look on.
